Where Creativity Takes Wing
Her little ears have popped out and her eyes are opening… she can’t really stand up though. Turns out her sibling is a dark tabby!
That huge cat tree is on order…

In autumn of 2017 my mother visited my home in Tucson. One of the things we did together was visit the San Xavier mission, which is the oldest in the US and is called “The White Dove of the Desert.” During that time I had some pretty strange things happen to me, as detailed in this article from July of last year.
I hadn’t thought much about it till everything changed during this Covid-19 pandemic, when I started catching up on things that I hadn’t had a chance to see or do in normal life. Among those backlogged items was finally watching a couple of episodes of The Dead Files that a friend of mine appeared in. He’s a local historian and they used him as part of some of their investigations. One in particular had bearing on my story, it’s an episode that first aired only five months ago.
The Dead Files Season 11 Episode 5: Desert Curse Sahuarita, Arizona
Several things come up in that episode but in case you don’t want to watch the whole thing, a dangerous entity is discovered that is a dead man, claiming to be a priest, who has the goal of tormenting the living and also dragging spirits to his church where he torments them and keeps them trapped there. They go into some detail on this during the episode.
Sahuarita, Arizona happens to be very close to the San Xavier mission. I couldn’t possibly have seen this episode before my visit or even before I made the last blog entry, yet there are aspects of my experience that really line up with what is said about this demonic priest-spirit.
Food for thought.
So if anyone is interested in investigating paranormal phenomena, this is a good spot – I’d love to see the results from more sensitive instrumentation than I have. There might be an interesting magnetic anomaly in the area, or something else. Who knows? Unfortunately I don’t really have the tools to make any kind of conclusive determination.

As any longtime reader knows, our Webmistress and Site Mascot, Nezumi, is now Eternal. She passed from the mortal realm last year. I am happy, however, to let you all know that we have a new Webmistress in the making – she was born on April 13th and she has already stolen my heart. She is the product of my friend’s cat, a wily calico who managed to slip out while they were looking for a vet to spay her.
This little girl, and her black furred sibling, will come home to us when they are old enough. Together with Shinji, they are likely to reign supreme for many years to come.
I’m pleased to share her very first picture. In this image, she’s only 3 days old! I had a dream about her before she was even born. Somehow I just knew there would be a calico and a black kitten in this litter, and if there were, I would stop at nothing to adopt them. Interestingly, there is a black marking on her left shoulder, just like the one Nezumi had, in the same spot. So I’ve kept my promise. My spouse and I are welcoming them into our home, just as soon as they are old enough to safely adopt. I can’t wait to get to know her and her sibling!

A note about naming: My spouse and I are coming up with a list of names we like but ultimately our new kits are going to name themselves. It always works best that way!
We’re going to be giving these kittens top quality care, as we have not always been able to do at times when we were poorer. These little bundles of joy are going to be on a grain free, high protein, high nutrition diet, with a brand new humongous cat tree for them to scratch and play with climb on, a great vet, and lots of love. Shinji of course will get lots of love and assistance with getting used to two young, energetic, furry menaces, but he likes other cats so I anticipate a fairly smooth transition. I’ll also be sharing pictures as they grow and develop. I think Nezumi and Orion would approve.
I have been seeking new and different ways to find peace and serenity. The inside of my head feels like a jumbled mess and at times creativity is lacking. So I figured that I’d experiment with photography and do a series of still lives, all evocative of tranquility in some way. I’m having a mini-obsession with chado so I’ll probably include a lot of that imagery as well.
In this first group of images, I have a cluster of wildflowers growing out of a crack in the pavement, some new tea things, and my “lucky bamboo” plant hanging out in my mini-atrium. Finally, my old boy Shinji decided to feature himself in the photo shoot. The only time he likes his picture taken is when I’m trying to make a delicate shot of something else. Oh well. Viva la Meezer!

And now… here’s the newest silly screenshots I’ve found in-game. Some of them I set up, others came that way. Hope you enjoy.

Lately I’ve been having trouble sleeping at night, what with all the worry and whatnot. Oh and the pandemic. So I’ve prescribed myself ten or fifteen minutes of Bob Ross at bedtime, just to calm my mind down and allow me to focus on creativity. I wrote the following story as an homage to him, and because his show is so special that it deserves at least one piece of fanfic.
—
The painter brushed the last tufts of grass on the painting, unmindful of the lights and cameras behind him. Then he picked up his palette knife and made fine scratches in the paint, here, there, everywhere.
“Now we’re going to take our knife and put in all the little sticks and twigs and things, all the little doers that will make people think you spent hours on this with a one-hair brush.” He turned his head and smiled. “And we won’t tell ’em any different, it’s our secret. Now we’re not in it to sell paintings, but if you happen to want to, things like this will really make ’em stand out.” He worked for a bit more until he was satisfied.
“Looks like we’ve got ourselves a painting,” he said. “Now, let’s give it a signature. As always, we use a script liner brush and some permanent red, with a tiny bit of paint thinner till we have a consistency about like ink…”
As he continued his familiar patter, he found himself wondering what he was going to do with himself now that he had completed his thirtieth season. No one else knew it yet, though he was sure his producer suspected, but he was just minutes away from announcing that he wouldn’t be coming back to Muncie. Even at fifty-one he felt the creak of winter in his bones, the slow march of age, both relics of a hard life. He wanted some time to walk in the same beloved woods he’d been painting for years, to just enjoy them without fear of busting leave or letting down the recruits.
In the luggage he’d left back at the hotel were title papers for a little cabin a few miles outside Anchorage, the same place he’d lived for more than a decade. It was the same kind of place he’d painted countless times. It sat on ten acres of forest, had its own well and a good woodstove, and best of all it was situated right near a singing little brook that he could listen to as he went to sleep.
The thought of the cabin made him smile as he gave his final farewell.
“And from all us here, happy painting, and God bless, my friends.” He waved at the camera and the paint spattered camera operator.
Right now, said camera operator was looking at him with a little concern. “You all right, Bob?”
“Yeah, just a little stiff today. Seven episodes in one day has to be a record, even for me.” Bob wiped a sneaky tear from his cheek. “Thirty seasons. That’s a lot of paintings.”
“It sure is,” said Ralph, the cameraman. “Well, at least we get a little break now. For a few weeks at least, because I heard we’re doing another season.”
Bob was just opening his mouth to say something when Shirley burst in. She was the office lady out front and she rarely entered the studio proper.
“Mr. Ross?” she asked. “There’s someone to see you.”
“Who is it?” Even though he had to be careful these days with the fans and all, Bob still liked visitors.
“Well, that’s the odd thing.” Shirley adjusted her glasses as if she wasn’t seeing straight. “He says his name is Rob, that you’ll know him, and he kinda looks like a clean cut version of you.”
“Rob’s here?” Bob’s face split in a grin. He hadn’t seen his twin since they’d met on mutual leave, oh, twenty years ago, and Rob had told him he’d been accepted into the Army Rangers. Rob was intensely private, as was Bob, so out of respect he’d never mentioned this brother on the air.
He dropped his palette onto a drop cloth covered table and trotted past Shirley on tired feet, heading for the front office. A tall man was there, standing straight, wearing a pair of slacks and light blue shirt, but looking like he wasn’t used to it. His chin was shaved blue and his head ended in a flat top that was nearly geometric. When he caught sight of Bob, his blue eyes lit up but there was a question in them.
“Rob, you old cuss, it’s good to see you!” said Bob, breaking the ice. He reached out to hug his long lost twin.
“Bob, you magnificent bastard, what in hell have you been doing with yourself, getting rich and famous on me?” The brothers hugged hard, pounding each other’s backs.
“Well, I guess I haven’t done too badly for myself at that,” said Bob. “Mostly, I do what I like to do, and help other folks do that too.”
“And make a happy buck off the special paints and brushes and stuff with your name plastered all over them,” said Rob with a grin. “Not that I mind, I think it’s great. How many more years you going to do this painting thing?”
“For the rest of my life, I guess,” said Bob, “but I was just going to let them know that I wouldn’t be back for next season of the show.”
“Why not?” Rob looked a bit concerned now, and searched his brother’s face for an answer.
“Well, to tell you the truth, I’m getting to the point where I’m repeating myself more often than not, in paintings and not just words. And I’m getting tired, Rob. I think maybe I’ve earned myself a few years of peace. I’ve got a plan to run a little wildlife sanctuary, where I can help hurt or sick critters, and maybe paint things just for myself. I just signed on a nice piece of property and I’m all set to move in a couple months.”
“I’ve got an idea,” said Rob, mischief dancing in his eyes. “Kind of a prank, you might say. I’ll come over to your place. You take a month or two, teach me how to paint your way. I’ll grow myself a beard, and then I’ll take over your show and see if anybody notices the difference. I’ll bet you fifty bucks no one does.”
“You? Lookin’ scruffy like me and changing up your painting style? That’ll be the day.” Bob never could resist a good bet, especially when it was combined with a fabulous joke. “Sure, why not? You can have half my old jeans. I still want the other half, I’ll be needin’ ’em. And I’ll teach you to feed squirrels, and introduce you to the Bird Lady here in Muncie. I know she’ll want to be in on this. It’ll be a hoot.”
Rob clapped his brother on the shoulder. “All right, sounds like a plan then. You finish up in here and I’ll meet you outside. Wouldn’t want to let the kitty out of the burlap quite yet.”
Two months later, the 31st season of the Joy of Painting aired. Bob was snug in his log cabin up near Anchorage, sitting in his easy chair with a glass of iced tea. The old TV set flickered as it brought him the latest episode of the Joy of Painting. Rob wasn’t doing too badly, considering. The wig looked good and his beard had grown in well, so he really looked the part. His touch with a palette knife was delicate enough for the wet on wet technique, his manner was gentle and his patter was nearly perfect. Except for one flaw.
“All right, now we’re going to put in some rocks in this stream, and some waves, and all these little dooters…”

Caves, as you’ll remember from my last update, are a huge new feature in Horse Isle 3.
The interconnected network of caverns stretches under the entire surface and can be found in every biome. In some cases you can travel from one biome to another. For instance, my club TigerTon has a cave right outside its borders (go south from the Horse Traders) that starts in Rooted Caves, but from there you can travel to the caves under the nearby Wondershrooms biome.
This is handy because it lets you get topazes from the jungle areas and purple crystals from the wonderland areas! You can also see the different areas on your minimap, represented by different colors. For example, Spider Caves are purple.

When opening caves, the more people in an adventuring party, the less energy it takes from all.
You cannot Quick-Travel into a cave but you can Quick-Travel out to any destination.
It’s a good idea to save cave entrances as Quick-Travel spots, so you can warp out and return to where you started.
Ride the bravest horse you can find, they will help you get over and around obstacles.
When in a Dangerous Paths area, it’s easier to get up the walls with a brave horse than it is by climbing – think of how it works around Ice Cliffs.
Where there are crystal shards, there are likely crystals – look around, crystals are glowing and obvious. I’ve included illustrations below.
You can open cave entrances from the inside but still need at least one other person with you in your Adventure Party.
Bring enough wood so you can use Torches! It consumes 1 piece of Wood per minute.
I found this on the profile of the club “Where The Drafts Go.” A complete list of all cave types from all biomes is still in the works. Eventually I’d like to also have a list of all unique areas within the caverns but that’s going to be a BIG job.
Not all resources have a purpose yet, but I’m sure they will.

Red – Black Sands
Yellow – Desert
Green – Swamp
Blue – Decay
Purple – Wonderland
Coal – Fall Forest
Iron – Sandstone
Copper – Mesa
Silver – Volcanic
Gold – Badlands
Platinum – Ice

Amethyst – Fjords
Citrine – Stone Forest
Diamond – Savannah
Emerald – Rainforest
Ruby – Dark Forest
Sapphire – Tundra
Topaz – Jungle
Tourmaline – Salt Flats
As of August 25, Bat Guano and Sulfur were introduced. Check these screenshots
out to know what you’re looking for!
Guano can be found in caves under Bamboo Forest, and Sulfur can be found in caves under Volcanic regions. Both are used for making Black Powder, which can be made into Firecrackers.
Both items are much easier to find if you have your Torch lit, especially the Guano. It kind of glows just a bit compared to surrounding rocks.
Guano is at top, and Sulfur is at bottom.
Note about crystals, ores and gems:
THEY GROW BACK. It takes a couple of days for that to happen, but it will. So if someone cleaned out your favorite gathering spot, don’t despair – just mark the spot (on a hand drawn map) and come back later. Or, if you see a bunch of shards lying around, come back later – crystals may regrow.
Yes, you can catch wilds in the caves. They are rare, they tend to be small, and they tend to be brave. Below is a screenshot showing a wilds another player caught.

“Congratulations, you’ve discovered the Underdark.”
-My wife
Caves are here, and they are AWESOME. I’ll do another update on them soon, especially as more features are rolled out, but I wanted to at least spread the word and give a few initial tips.
Caves underlie most of the Infinite Wilds. There are plains, mountains, water,
hills, columns, crystals, gems, glowing mushrooms, and more. There are even small, rare wilds that are apparently really good climbers. Some caves are dark so you need a torch or lantern, others have a natural glow. There is a type of cave for every Biome, so 25 in all.
You’ve probably seen the cave entrances around – boulders with a smaller boulder stuck into them. Those need to be opened as a team effort. You need to form an Adventure party and 12000 Energy will be taken from the members of that party. So if you had 12 people, they’d all lose 1000 Energy. If only 2, they’d all lose 6000, and you can’t do it alone. An opened cave entrance stays open for a real-world year before needing to be re-opened again.
There are some quirks about Caves…. you can Quick Travel to player locations, and you can teleport to any club or surface Travel location from inside them, but you can’t teleport back into the caves from the surface, and you can’t save Travel headings while inside. You can, however, ride horses inside. The braver, the better, as there are mountains and difficult terrain to cross in places.
Also, caves interconnect. There are little ones and huge branching ones. We’ve only begun to explore! You can gather things in caves – silver, iron, and Imbuement gems. Imbuement gems can no longer be bought at the Importer, though you can still find them in player stores or from Pitcher plants and other sources of random items. There’s also copper, gold, and platinum now, and plans to incorporate them into crafting later.
Stay tuned for more information, including information about the new minigame, but in the meantime, enjoy these screenshots below!

There are a lot of funny things that can happen on Horse Isle. In the days to come, I’ll be drawing cartoons about some of these and also sharing funny screenshots I’ve found. When I have enough they’ll all be linked on the main Horse Isle 3 Hints page.
I hope you enjoy!

I’ll bet this isn’t a post you ever thought you would see! Along with my ideas for “extreme sports,” I’ve also included some information on training your horse in bravery, because for most of these you’ll need a brave horse.
No-one gets hurt in Horse Isle 3, though you can see some pretty spectacular bounces, so this is all fun and games. Still, a Salus amulet or preventive exam for your horse are definitely good ideas.
The Bravery stat can’t be changed or trained, and of course the higher the better.
However, you can train your horse’s Intelligence, and that helps your horse’s overall bravery.
Finally, knowing your horse well can increase its Bravery even more. When I started riding Strider, my primary riding horse, he would follow trails and go over normal hills and through water. However after I got a couple thousand experience points on him, eventually he was able to ride straight up mountains and across Badlands without a hitch!
Figuring out what your horse’s favorite treat is can really help you too because it gives you a stronger bond. There are guides to doing this in the Horse Isle 3 player forums.

Did you know that you can surf on Club fountains? Just jump in the middle and see how long you can stay on top of the stream. A timer starts so you can keep track of the time.
You can do this with our without your horse. You can climb quite a sheer cliff on foot by holding down the up arrow key plus the right arrow key (for some reason this works better than left) while hitting the spacebar repeatedly. This is also how to get out of sinkholes.

This can be done with pink Ice Cliffs and also with some Obsidian Spires. You run at the object with a really brave horse and if you do it right, you’ll scoot right up the side.
This can be done in sheer alpine areas, off mesas, off the sides of beach spirals, and off fjords. Get your horse running as fast as it can go, holding down the spacebar, and release to jump right at the edge. With practice, you can catch quite a bit of air.
(Note: wearing a Salus amulet or getting a preventive exam at the vet can be really helpful here.)

Head out to Red Rock country, such as near WestWorld Village. Pick a fast horse. See how close you can get to the cactus at a full run without getting stuck!

This one is my favorite!
Get a balloon, and a bunch of lamp oil. See this article for the guide on that. Get your balloon up just as high as you can, so you’re above the sky and all you see is a rounded surface below. It helps to start from a Beach Spiral, tower, or mountain top. Then put away the balloon by pressing X.
You’ll fall for quite a while and bounce at least twice when you hit!
It can be really fun to hit “print screen” at the same time so you have a record of how high you went.

Similar to skydiving but can be done without a balloon. Can be done best from towers, or the Horse Statue at the center of the world.

Kinda like skydiving – you go out to the deepest ocean you can find and put your boat away, then put on your underwater helmet to see just how deep you can go. Look around for a while, make lots of Jacques Cousteau references, and then enjoy any notifications you might get, while coming back up.

Hang Gliding
Find a high place, jump off it with wings strapped to your back. Exhilaration ensues. ‘Nuff said!

Skiing and Ice Skating are now available, and so is Cave-Swinging! Information will be forthcoming.
