Improve your drawings – with one simple trick!

Happy Inktober Day number 26!  I missed yesterday so today’s a tip, too.
If you are drawing anything with hard edges, your work will look so much better if you use sharp, clean lines and good perspective. So, how can an enterprising artist keep their fluid, natural lines and combine them with correct mechanical structures without the whole thing looking stiff?

I find that what works best is to rough out my drawing in pencil, so that things still look natural, and then use a clear plastic ruler to redraw anything that needs to be exact. Simple!

That way the woman at the table can still have her beautiful, flowing hair and her frilly dress, but the stripes on her tablecloth will be even and the legs straight. Or the wild horses can still look dynamic and three dimensional, while the old fence posts they are standing near still stand straight and tall with good parallel lines. Think of how the impact might be different if those posts were drawn with wavering unrealistic lines. A great opportunity for contrast would be completely lost.
Paying some attention to how things are really shaped, even in your sketches, will give your work a more grounded, realistic look and bring a hint of professionalism. To me, nothing is sadder than seeing an artist draw a really beautiful figure, animal, or natural landscape – then completely ignore the structure of the piece, so the setting looks skewed and lopsided because none of lines are straight, even when they are supposed to be. It’s a fast way to ruin an otherwise beautiful work.
Best of all, this problem is not only easy to fix, but helps train your eye to be a better artist!

Artificial Intelligence – Thoughts of an Aircraft

This challenge made me think of an ultra-short story I wrote a while back about an aircraft that was controlled by an AI and was wondering what they wanted to do with their life.

Anyone interested can read that story here:  Thoughts Of An Aircraft

Considering that any computer or group of computers with enough interconnections could possibly “wake up,” and our brains are nothing but biological computers, some say the internet might wake up someday.  Some say it already has.  I still say hello sometimes, in the Google search box.  Sometimes… it almost seems as if I get an answer.

I play a lot with the idea of created intelligence.  Once I wrote a short-short story about a group of seven nodes of a single AI, each node consisting of an android body but sharing a common, highly advanced program.  They had been bought by an eccentric gentleman to see if he could convince them to wake up by treating them if they were collectively alive.

The very questions of human existence are locked up in this type of discussion – what does it really mean to be not just a living being, but a person?  Where does self awareness start?  My cat is self aware.  How complex does a system really have to be before it wakes up?

Also, as we develop prosthetic body parts, which we are already doing – artificial hearts, cochlear implants, soon artificial eyes, and currently even brain controlled prosthetic limbs, will that make us any less human?  Or is it just an extension of our mastery of tool use?

I’ll close here with a joke.  I’m not quoting it exactly here, and I think it came from the William Gibson novel Neuromancer, though I can’t exactly recall.

A powerful AI was created to solve Japan’s rice growing crisis.  Scientists wrote the finest code, run on the best computer that could be built.  All data that could be gathered about soil quality, weather, rainfall estimates, and plant growth rates was loaded into the computer’s memory.  Finally they turned it on.

They knew they had created a true Artificial Intelligence when the program woke up, chewed over the data, and finally said “Screw you, Jack, I don’t eat rice!”

How To Eat Candy Corn

For the 21st day of Inktober, I have a special treat: A guide on how to eat candy corn, and a reminder of the book giveaway that runs October 21-23!

candy-corn-infographic

Halloween is in the air. For me, that means an annual candy corn craving. Most people in the US are probably familiar with these fun little tri colored treats. Did you know there’s more than one way to eat them?

You can eat them by the bunch – good if you’re really hungry.

You can eat them by the piece – good if you want to make them last.

You can let them dissolve – good for long term flavor.

You can nibble them by the color – see if you can taste a difference.

You can break them into pieces and eat them in little heaps of each color – good for the obsessive people among us, like me.

You can let it dry out so it’s crunchy.

You can try different flavors too. I like Brach’s candy corn, because they use honey and I think that makes the flavor richer and more mellow.

Protip: Dollar store candy corn doesn’t taste as good – the flavor is weaker and it leaves an aftertaste. FIfty cents more gets you the good stuff.

Candy corn also comes in cappuchino, peanut butter, chocolate, caramel, and my favorite, pumpkin spice. In my opinion, pumpkin spice and candy corn flavor is a match made in heaven.

What’s your favorite way to eat candy corn? Any odd flavors I’ve missed?

Versatile Blogger Award

It’s been an amazing day for me.  Last night I was unexpectedly awarded this, and this morning I found another kind blogger had awarded me the Sunshine Blogger Award too!  I want to give them both the attention they are due, so I’m acknowledging both in separate posts.

Thank you very much, Anne J, for giving me this award.  I really appreciate the support you have given me and I think your blog is awesome.  You are a great photographer.  Readers, her blog really is great – you can find it here, at Food-Travel-Tour.

My Answers to the questions:

Why I started blogging

I’d wanted to blog for a while but I could never really think of anything to say.  Then a site called Bubblews came along, and at the beginning it paid people a penny a view, like, and comment.  I made about a hundred dollars from that site, over a couple of years, and eventually things went downhill and the place closed their doors.  However, the promise of a small payout kept me writing, two or three little posts a day, and that got me into the habit.

Then I started a personal blog – mostly with the posts I’d saved from there.  It was pretty forgettable, really.  But I learned and it grew.  I’m still learning.  I found my question that needed to be answered, put some focus into the blog.  I’m going to keep on making it better until blogging goes the way of the dodo bird.

Seven random facts about myself

I once took my notes in an art history class with a bamboo dip pen and bottled ink.

I soloed an airplane before I drove a car by myself.

I lived for a month and a half in the Nevada desert, in a tent, with my partner and two cats.

I really like hummus on dry ramen block.

I wrote an entire novel between calls at a call center, then published it.

I started reading at two.

I didn’t start watching TV till I was six.

The Sunshine Blogger Award

I was really pleased and honored to get the Sunshine Blogger Award from Speaking Up For Myself.  I like that blog and was so happy for the recognition!  Thank you, friend!  I’ll answer the questions below and create new ones.  I am passing the award along to seven blogs I think are great, and have added sunshine to my life.

Who knows?  You might like them too if you haven’t discovered them already.

What would you change about your life, if given a chance?

I would have wanted my younger self to have more drive and ambition, to ask more questions, and really think about what I wanted to do in my life. I wish I could have whispered into the ear of my younger self “get into health care, help people, and don’t forget to write all you can.”

How do you see yourself ten years from now?

I want to have grown greatly in my art and writing.  I will have several more novels finished and if blogs are still popular, I hope this one is an old and well grown one.  I also hope to have moved up in position at my job so I can save for the future, and possibly own a little land.

How would you make a difference?

I try to make a difference by helping others where I can, usually in service rather than financially.  Sometimes I get into trouble doing that because my bosses don’t like it.  At the least, I try to offer good advice and support to those who are in need of it.  I try to make a difference through writing, too, but anyone can make a difference by just being kind.

What would you say to people who reach out to you for help?

I say “I’ll do what I can,” and I help how I can but I don’t endanger myself by doing so.  I’ll take somebody home from work if they need a ride, or give them a shirt if they’re cold, or feed them if they are hungry.  I’ll offer support if they’re sad.  But I won’t harm my family by doing so.  I try to combine compassion with sense.

What would your epitaph read?

Honestly?  I don’t know.  “She always did her best,” would be nice to see.  It’s not really true now but I’d like for it to be.

Thank you for the questions!  They were interesting!
